Some autos have a common problem, that after a while the button on the lever, the little edge type things will snap, so good news is, might only be a small problem costing ~$20 or so. Get a small screwdriver or moulding type tool, and out it down each side of the button, trying to push the button up and out, then see if it looks damaged/worn/distorted. Bad news is, if the car is on, and not going into drive, you will need a transmission reconstruction, usually costing around ~$2300 (thats just to do the transmission, not including the labour to get the box out and in). I hope its only the little plastic button for your sake!

There is a good exploded picture of the selector mechanism in the downloadable workshop manual - section 23a - it appears that the knob is removeable as LawlMagna explains. The problem should only be in the selector button not releasing to allow the selector to move thru the gate into reverse etc. Good Luck.
